RTR recently celebrated the retirement of our own Mike Nowakowski in a manner befitting one of the greats: by retiring his number. The #37 represents Mike’s years of dedicated service to the electric utility industry. Mike served as an outage engineer for RTR with style, class, dedication and uncommon humility.
Mike is well loved, universally respected and will be sorely missed as a co-worker, mentor and friend. We wish Mike and his lovely wife Cathy (who just recently became grandparents) and their family every happiness.
RTR Energy Solutions provides many services, one of which is storm support during and after severe weather events. This week northeastern Pennsylvania was struck by severe thunderstorms causing downed wires and power outages throughout the area. Several RTR employees responded to assess downed lines and protect them from causing additional injury given that the integrity of a downed line is not always known.
A single phase line, the kind that provides power for heating and lighting that most of us are used to seeing, can potentially carry in excess of 50 amps (7,000 volts). Given that beyond 10 amps, death is probable, it is vital that downed lines that may still be carrying power are monitored and protected until such time as repairs can be made. RTR provides that service whenever the need arises.
RTR is proud to announce the addition of Bob Deacon as we continue to grow and expand. He will be part of the Outage Coordination group as well as working in construction management in our Hellertown office. Bob holds a B.S. in Business/Finance and has over 30 years of experience in the electric power industry. Bob worked as a PPL construction department electrician, a System Operator, Transmission Power Dispatcher, Generation Dispatcher, in addition to Principal Trader and Trading Manager positions at PPL Energy Plus and Talen Energy. Bob holds current NERC Reliability Coordinator and Balancing and Interchange Certifications.
RTR welcomes Bob to our ever expanding close-knit team of highly experienced and multi-talented individuals.
Weather is a concern for many businesses and certainly is at RTR. Project management, surveying, line-work, mobilization, supply all require attention to expected weather patterns for both planning and safety. While there are many weather apps on the market there is one that stands head and shoulders above the rest called Dark Sky. Unlike others Dark Sky provides “hyper-local” weather forecasting, meaning the weather you can expect directly where you stand at any particular moment.
All the Data You Need
Whether you scroll through a textual representation or watch the weather develop through an amazing 3d map simulation you can get precise data for either the rain that’s due to start in a few minutes to the developing snow storm arriving in a few days. Dark Sky allows you to see not only predicted temperatures and precipitation amounts on the hour but also wind speed and direction, humidity and UV index. Scroll through the map simulation and you can watch the weather develop from the past and watch it develop into the coming week.
Alerts can be set to include custom alerts, severe weather alerts or simple daily summaries. The Dark Sky App uses cell phone GPS location to provide detailed weather to your exact location, not the nearest population center; but where you stand. Dark Sky is an invaluable tool for anyone who either works in the elements or those who schedule work affected by weather.
Note: The RTR Energy Solutions websites use the Dark Sky widget (right sidebar from a computer or below on the RTR mobile site). The map is interactive. Pan and zoom to locate your area and click the drop menu to select your weather criteria and the date/time for which you’d like a forecast. Below is a short video showing demonstrating the user interface.

7 RTR employees and 2 family members raced to the finish line of the 5K Warrior Dash on Saturday, August 26th at 9am on a chilly morning in Long Pond, Pa. at the Pocono Raceway. Our team ran along an obstacle course into muddy water, climbed a roped cliffhanger, jumped through fire and over and under many other obstacles along the 3.1 mile course. Although, our warriors didn’t require any trips to the emergency room, they crossed the finish line a little battered and bruised, much less pristine than when they started; but still smiling as is common in any gathering of RTR staff. Proceeds from Warrior Dash benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Please click here to make a donation.
