Electricity demand across the PJM region is entering a period of significant change, creating new challenges for the utilities responsible for keeping power reliable and infrastructure ready for what comes next.
On July 2, 2026, PJM reached a preliminary all-time peak load of approximately 168,158 MW, surpassing the previous record set in 2006. The milestone came as electricity demand continues to climb throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest.
The longer-term outlook is even more significant. PJM has identified data centers and other large electricity users as major drivers of future demand. In an August 13 filing, PJM stated that approximately 30 GW of the 32 GW of forecasted electricity-demand growth between 2024 and 2030 is attributed to data centers.
For utilities, meeting that demand is about more than generating additional electricity. It also requires the physical infrastructure capable of safely and reliably delivering it.
More Demand Means More Infrastructure Coordination
PJM continues to plan transmission enhancements and expansions throughout its footprint. A collection of previously identified transmission solutions addressing accelerated load growth, changes in generation and shifting regional power flows was estimated to require approximately $6 billion in investment.
As these projects move from planning into execution, utilities must coordinate increasingly complex scopes involving transmission infrastructure, substations, existing assets, scheduled outages, environmental requirements and work occurring around energized systems.
That makes early field intelligence increasingly important.
Accurate surveying and existing-condition data can identify conflicts before construction begins. Constructability reviews can help determine how work should be sequenced in the field. Outage planning must balance construction needs against system reliability. Environmental coordination has to progress alongside the project rather than becoming a late-stage obstacle.
These disciplines become even more important when multiple upgrades are occurring across an active utility system.
