RTR Now Offers Bathymetric Surveying

In addition to aerial (drone) surveying and traditional GPS and Robotic land surveying, RTR has now added Bathymetric Surveying to our ever growing list of capabilities. Bathymetry (from the Greek for “deep measure“) consists of surveying the bottoms of bodies of water using a sonar unit affixed beneath a remote controlled, GPS enabled boat. The GPS unit visible above the boat gathers satellite data while the blue-tooth enabled echo-sounder beneath bounces sound waves off the pond bottom to map the underwater topography (in the videos below depths are captured once every second). “SS RTR” allows us to create topographic maps of the bottom of any body of water and, using Autodesk Civil3D, determine the volume of water contained within. The addition of Bathymetry to our capabilities, combined with our time-saving custom apps and experience makes our Survey department capable of handling any survey project and turning it around more efficiently than any other firm.

Innovation and automation are focal points at RTR. One recent innovation is the development of our own suite of cloud-based mobile apps. RTR has designed and implemented apps for everything from environmental inspections to project status reporting, constructability reporting, sagging and even drone flight logging. Senior linemen no longer need to take photographs and field notes separately and can now collect information easily in one app on a tablet which can then be downloaded immediately in our offices with no need to email, upload or compile information. Our apps are created in-house in a collaborative effort between our designers and our seasoned pros doing the field collection. Our methods are such that we can edit our data collection software in real-time should our field personnel request an upgrade or change. We make the changes in the office, they refresh the app and continue collecting.

Our apps also automate field data collection and website linking to provide real-time project status via automated webpages to client project managers (see below). Whether we are live-sagging a power line or staking out a gas line, project managers can instantly view our surveyors progress (including photographs of areas of concern) by simply visiting a webpage which is kept current dynamically through our cloud-based data collection app. Data collected with our apps is then downloaded to spreadsheets that have been pre-linked to report templates that automate everything from expenses to final field cut sheets and invoicing. Reports that take others hours take us mere minutes.

Led by our Technology Services Manager Mike Kunkel (FAA licensed drone pilot), RTR has created a program to provide aerial surveying, inspection, mapping and thermal imaging both as stand alone services and to support our Outage Coordination, Surveying, Project Management and Environmental groups. Mike has years of drone piloting experience and in addition construction manager Jim Mylin, and Senior Surveyor Bud Miller, recently obtained their licenses as UAV (drone) pilots.

Currently the RTR aerial fleet consists of two units: a Yuneec 520 equipped with a FLIR (forward looking infrared) camera capable of capturing both hi-res video and thermal imaging and an Autel EVO capable of capturing video at 4k resolution at 60 frames per second.
